5 Tricks to Teach Your Dog ... and Build Your Dog & Kiddo’s Bond

Dogs are one of the most popular pets in the world. They offer us companionship, love, and support. In return, we owe them our care and attention. Part of being a responsible dog owner is teaching your furry friend some tricks to make their life – and yours – a little easier. By training your dog and teaching them tricks, you can strengthen your bond even more. Also, you’ll have lots of fun doing it!

If you’re not just a dog parent, but a parent to a tiny human too, we’re sure you’ll agree that there’s nothing like the bond between a child and their pet. We will explore five tricks that you can teach your dog. Even better, these simple commands are so easy your kiddo can even do it (with your help, of course!). 1. High five

Teaching a dog to give you a high five is relatively simple.

➡️Hide a treat in your fist and let your doggo smell it.

➡️When they start pawing at your fist, say the command.

➡️Then move your hand into the high five position.

That’s it! Repeat as many times as necessary and you’ll have a high-fiving dog.

2. Kiss

This is a trick most kids love. Well, let’s admit it: we all love this trick. Who doesn’t want a wet snout to press on your cheek? To teach your dog this trick, just put a dab of peanut butter on your cheek and say ‘kiss’. Then simply let your dog lick the peanut butter off your cheek. Eventually, do it without the peanut butter.

3. Hide-and-Seek

Tell your dog to stay while you run and hide. When ready, say ‘Find me’, or any similar command. A good incentive is a treat hidden in your pocket (that you should let your doggo smell before you hide so they know it’s there). Once your dog finds you, make sure you give them lots of praise and pets.

4. Play soccer

Most dogs love playing with balls and pushing one around comes naturally to most of them, especially when they see your little one do it. Tell your kiddo to encourage your dog to push the ball into a goal. When they do, reward them with their favorite treat.

5. Sing

Now this is the most fun one. The first step is to find out what music your dog likes. Expose them to different genres, and when you see which one they react to the most, play lots and lots of it. Have your child howl to it and encourage your dog to do it too while saying ‘Sing’. That’s it! Your kiddo can then switch to singing, although they might enjoy howling together even more. A word of advice: teach both of them to stop, too!

Teaching your dog tricks is a great way to spend time with them and bond. It's also a lot of fun to see your dog succeed at learning something new. You can teach your dog any of these tricks with a bit of patience and positive reinforcement.
